Job Description for Faculty Position in Sociology of the Environment

The Center for Environmental Studies and the Department of Sociology at Brown University seek to recruit a Professor of Sociology (tenure-track and open rank) whose research addresses the interactions of human systems and the natural environment, beginningJuly 1, 2014. The new faculty member will have appointments in the Center for Environmental Studies and the Department of Sociology, with tenure (or the potential for tenure) in the Department of Sociology. He/she will contribute to undergraduate teaching and mentorship primarily within the Center for Environmental Studies, and to graduate training in Sociology. The appointee will also join a growing interdisciplinary environmental research community across the university, including in Sociology, CES, and the Environmental Change Initiative. A successful senior candidate must have an outstanding record of national and international scholarly achievement, a proven record of successful research funding, and demonstrated excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching and advising. A successful junior candidate must be engaged in a research program with the potential to influence his/her field, demonstrate the intention to obtain external funding, and demonstrate the potential for excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching and advising. All candidates must be committed to interdisciplinary research and education from a solid foundation in sociological theory and research. Junior candidates must have a doctoral degree granted or in hand by August 2014.
